COMPASSION – showing kindness, concern and willingness to help others. Or, sympathetic pity and concern for the suffering and misfortunes of others.
A year ago, I began a quest to truly embody compassion. Sure, I was kind to people and definitely had pity and concern for those going through hardships. People would say I was a good listener, and they felt I had concern for their well-being. And, it was compassion that put me on the path to help veterans and first responders suffering from trauma. So, why did I choose this quest for compassion?
Well, I’m not sure I really chose IT. Thanks to Divine intervention, compassion chose ME. While I regularly helped others to feel better about themselves, I was a TYRANT when it came to ME.
Specifically, my internal dialogue was abusive. “I am a failure”. “I’m not good enough”. “I shouldn’t have done that” or “I should have done that instead”. I always screw up”. “I am a disappointment”. And, on and on and on. For 2 years, I worked with my mentor, Dr. Alison J. Kay, to clear the false beliefs and trauma behind this negative self-talk. However, this was an ARDUOUS process and my lack of compassion and forgiveness for MYSELF slowed it down and made it so much more challenging.
Compassion for Self is Important!
Due to my own healing process, I learned compassion for oneself is IMPERATIVE to one’s mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. And, it makes me wonder – is it possible to completely care about and help others if we’re beating ourselves up? I know that behavior led to so much anguish, stress, and suffering in my life. Imagine how much more compassion we could exude for humanity if we started with ourselves!
Furthermore, how would our lives improve if we could find it in our hearts to be kind and compassionate to OURSELVES? And, I don’t mean by rewarding ourselves with chocolate, clothes, or a night out on the town. I mean by lovingly allowing ourselves to be perfectly flawed humans who are doing the best we can in the moment. And so, that’s my desire for you today. Lastly, I invite you to think of one kind sentence to say to yourself before you go to sleep each night and upon awakening each day. For instance, an example is “I am loved.” Because – you ARE!
I will share more insights about compassion this week and offer tools you can use to develop and embody it. Also, feel free to share in the comments below the false belief you torture yourself with regularly. And, if you like, share the new thought you’re going to choose to focus on each day.
Sending you peace and reinforcement for change.
